2012 Opportunities to become a Snowsports Instructor
Interested in becoming a ski or snowboard instructor? There is no better place to start your career in the Snowsports industry than at Mt Hutt! We offer three pathways to becoming an instructor and obtaining internationally recognized qualifications with different training opportunities to suit your needs and schedule.
Our trainers will develop your understanding as well as gain the relevant skills and knowledge required to succeed within the New Zealand Snowsports Instructors Alliance (NZSIA) / Snowboard Instruction New Zealand (SBINZ) examination system. In 2012 there will be 3 distinct instructor training courses available for preparation for both the NZSIA / SBINZ Level One and Level Two exams.
Option 1: Full Time Course with Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) for the NZSIA / SBINZ Level One and Level Two Exams
Option 2: A three consecutive weekend course providing training specific to candidates sitting the NZSIA / SBINZ Level One Exam course which is run by NZSIA / SBINZ. For more information on the certification course please visit www.nzsia.org.

Important Information
The Components
- Ski or snowboard on a variety of terrain
- Demonstrate a range of correct skiing or snowboarding techniques
- Demonstrate their understanding of the progressions that underlay the teaching of either skiing or snowboarding
- Plan for a lesson for a beginner or intermediate skier or snowboarder
- Present a lesson for a beginner or intermediate skier or snowboarder
- Observe, analyse and suggest improvement strategies and exercises for a snowboarder or skier
- Adhere to safe skiing or snowboarding practices
Additional Information
Option One: Full time, season long programme run in conjunction with Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT).
- Students must attend 80% of the course
- Students must pass Level 1 to be eligible for the Level 2 course
- Students must attend all classroom work
Option Two and Three: Weekend Instructor Preparation Course (WIPC) at Mt Hutt.

In order to obtain your Level Two Instructors Qualfication you must have your Level One NZSIA / SBINZ Certification.

NZSIA FEES 2011 (the NZSIA registration fee to become a member costs $75).

Snowboard Level 1 exam $600.00
Snowboard Level 2 exam $600.00 - Season pass – Early Bird Mt Hutt Season pass rate(16 February 1012 - 15 March 2012) $699 for an adult and from beginning of 16 March 2012 - $1049. For those enrolled on the CPIT course an Early Bird Student pass costs $549.
- Transport $600.00 - $700.00 (cheaper if purchased in February pre-season & covers an entire season by bus from Methven to Mt Hutt return daily)

Ski/board equipment and clothing can be expensive to
fit out a complete new kit and can range from anywhere
from NZD $500 - $3000.
- Accommodation and food. This is variable and it is suggested that you would need to budget for at least $200 / week.
Student Loans & Allowances
The full time season long programme run in conjunction with CPIT is eligible for loans and allowances. For information regarding your student loan and allowance entitlements contact the Department for Work & Income (DWI) on freephone 0800 88 99 00.
Teaching Approach - Industry Training
These programmes are delivered by Mt Hutt's Snowsports School, and provide expert instructing staff as well as opportunities for students to:
- Shadow - student will be provided with opportunities to shadow workshops that are being taught to Snowsports School guests.
- Self-improvement practice time.
These opportunities provide the students with invaluable experiences working with real guests, and give them opportunities to improve their level of skills and teaching performance.

Career Outcomes
The CPIT programme is an ideal preparation for rookie ski and snowboard instructors who want to present themselves to the NZSIA / SBINZ Level 2 Ski & Snowboard Instructors qualification. Graduates then have the opportunity to seek work as ski and snowboard instructors across the world with their internationally recognized qualification. After several winter seasons as instructors, graduates may move onto other positions within the snow sport industry or work in other areas of the tourism industry.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Applicants must be:
- At least 17 years of age as of September 2012
- Able to ski or snowboard to an advanced or high intermediate level (minimum level 5).
- Physically fit
- Have good listening and speaking skills
- Applicants with non-English speaking background must have listening and speaking skills ILETS 5.5 (no lower than 6 in speaking and listening subtests)
Application & Selection Process for the CPIT Programme
Ski and snowboard instructors need to have a positive attitude, and interest in working with people and an ability and enthusiasm to learn and to teach. The key to successful entry into this programme will be your ability to demonstrate the above along with advanced intermediate skiing or snowboarding skills. Students will be selected on the following criteria:
- Ability to ski or snowboard to an advanced intermediate level 5 - 6
- Ability to work with others in a group situation
- Ability to listen and respond to instruction
- Willingness to learn
- Physical fitness
- Ability to communicate effectively with adults and kids
As part of the selection process applicants will be required to attend an interview during early May 2012 at the Mt Hutt Snow Centre, Methven or by phone. You will then be contacted by phone and e-mail whether you have been accepted into the programme. Students selected from the interview will have a trial period of one week of on-snow training to see whether the ski/snowboard ability meets the level required.
